Jack Iredale with an insight into Black Company's current project...

Right, so this is my....third blog, I think, but this is the first one about Black Company. Probably because I only just became part of it in the last month. And so far it’s been a great experience.

Now, most of you reading this will know the piece we’re doing is called Blackout, but may not know what exactly it is. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say it’s a look at what happens when someone gets pushed too far. It’s a fantastic script, with a lot more to it than that, but to say anymore would ruin it. ‘sides, it’s not just the script that has to be good, it’s what you do with it. And what Black is doing with it is waaaaay better than good. It’s a piece that shows in physical theatre, less can be more, how the simplest things are sometimes the most effective. It’s a piece we’ve created as a group, so there’s a bit of everyone’s ideas in it, which makes it a piece that everyone can be proud of. There are sections of frantic violence, and sections of slower, more emotive scenes, shown through the dialogue, as well as the actions we've devised alongside it.

The first session of Black was treated as an audition for new members, and I think old Black company members, Yew-Tree...goers from other sessions and brand new people have come together as a group really fast, and really well. From an outsider’s perspective, I really doubt they’d be able to tell who was a newbie and who was an already established member, we get on that well. It’s really great to see new people putting up as many ideas as the established group. It wasn’t a standard audition; it was an introduction to the process we’ve been doing every session for devising the action. I mean, yes, it can be hard work, but the audition prepped people for that, so it’s not like that came out of nowhere. It can be tiring, but it’s also really good fun, and it’s something that I’m really happy to be part of, and can’t wait to perform.

Cos it’s brill.
