This week has seen the launch of many new things…firstly the naming of each company in the youth theatre…something we’ve been attempting to do for ages with very little success…by the end of the week every “branch” of Yew Tree Youth Theatre will have a name. The rules when naming are simple…a colour…no more than 2 syllables voted by the group preceded by the word “the” and followed by the word “company.” So we all ready have “The Black, Gold, Red, Purple and Crimson Companies and the other 6 groups will choose their colour over this next week…I’m so pleased we’ll finally have a way of effectively identifying different aspects of Yew Tree…I wonder how long it’ll take for them to get embedded in the fabric of the youth theatre.

Then there are the new projects…this week I have started devising A Christmas Carol and Beauty and the Beast both of which will be performed at Christmas. The initial ideas that have emerged for both of the stories have been rich and inspiring…so much so that I ‘m planning on spending tomorrow – or at least part of it – trying to capture them on paper to keep them safe for September when we go into rehearsals. I’ve already started the process today in fact… It feels very important that I don’t lose the human chains and weight of the Marley scene and the cold, harsh, half hidden realisation of Scrooge. Equally the conventions and mystery of Beauty and the Beast with the characters and sense of fun and fairy tale created on Monday night need to be captured. It makes me feel more than a little excited regarding what’s in store this term and next...

Also the Black Company (formally known as the 17+ group) started the 15 minute Hamlet this week. Their response was intriguing a real mix of worry and abandon, of bewilderment and play. It’s going to be a fascinating journey as the 2 casts engage with the absurdity of the text in order to translate it for the audience.

The final new initiative I’m going to record in this week’s blog is our plan to become rich…due to the ridiculously depressing funding scene for the youth theatre we will be playing the lottery every week so look out for the numbers 5, 7, 9, 11, 15, 22 and 41. If we win we’ll build a theatre…purpose built for Yew Tree productions…oh what it is to dream…
