Cricket and drama...

My actors potentially get tired of my constant insistence regarding particular principles of rehearsals and workshops, I say potentially - the occasional rolled eyes I see as I’m being persistent, let me know that on occasion it’s entirely the case.

My insistence that…

·      If somebody is talking to the room – everyone should be openly and actively listening
·      That attendance is non – negotiable – every absence has a negative impact on both the rehearsal process and the subsequent performance
·      That every action in the rehearsal room – whether you are in focus at that point or waiting for your moment has an impact – and that the same principle equally applies to everything you do back stage
·      That mutual support in a company or cast is vital to each actors confidence, creativity and concentration and that in turn maximizes the standard of what we do as a collective
·      That over and above anything else the play, the work - is the most important thing – for apart from anything else that is what binds us together
·      That the demands of making theatre are many and intense
·      That the reward of meeting these demands are generous and joyous

The Osborne family have an important date with the T20 finals this afternoon – we are an enthusiastic cricketing family – admittedly Amy less so but she’s a sport so she humours us on occasions such as this.  I love how in life sometimes seemingly unrelated worlds can teach each other something…before the match Nasser Hussain said “Culture always beats strategy.”  Every principle I sometimes tiresomely insist upon is about building a culture that both inspires and encourages the best process and product possible. They are principles that allow everyone involved to reach their significant potential…rest assured my insistence on principles isn’t going to be going anywhere anytime soon because by following them we get the culture right.  If we get the culture right anything is possible.

As I post this England haven’t had the best start…its going to be a long afternoon…another example of drama and cricket standing hand in hand perhaps
