Yesterday marked the second rehearsal of Tomorrow I'll Be Happy after our month off! The first rehearsal back was last week and it went swimmingly - and that's partly the reason why yesterday had the potential to be tragic and train-wrecky and less than heartening. Sarah and Danny, trying to revive the play for the Brewery Arts Centre Stage in Kendal, said "Go on... it's ok, live a little... find new things, try something different!"
It's always difficult to shake things up when you've found a way of doing something that works. If you've got a way of saying something, or a pattern of speech, or a certain set of gestures that your character uses, it's super difficult to change anything - you get attached and comfortable and reluctant to have a rejig. But before we could protest, the music started and we launched into Tomorrow I'll Be Happy with 'do something different' echoing around the room. And then - Katie Ludvigsen! Katie's character is called Jadenne and she is a prison inmate who stabs another character with nail scissors - feisty, intelligent, and downright scary! But yesterday Katie bravely turned Jadenne into a character on fire! It was literally the best it has ever been performed and, because I'm the other character in the scene, gave me loads to bounce off! It's worth saying that Katie is the youngest cast member at a whole 14 nearly 15 years old, and I am in awe. (Love to Katie)
Katie's marvellous step up inspired everyone else to do different things. There were different tones of voice, different dynamics, different stage pictures, different everything. And because things weren't as they'd been before, we were kept on our toes and suddenly (hallelujah) it felt like the events of the play were happening for the first time!
Yesterday's rehearsal was really worth blogging about because nobody played it safe. Everyone did things differently and, as Jonathan Harvey so nicely puts it, "A change is as good as a rest"! Kendal is going to be excellent, and I am very verrrrry excited.
