Emily is our second...

So yesterday was Black Company's performance for Remember the Oaks; a play in which we portrayed how the memory of what happened in the Barnsley Mining Disaster 150 years ago has changed through the years and becoming more and more distant, hence why the permanent memorial is being raised for so that the memory lives on. 9:15am on a Sunday morning in Barnsley Lamproom Theatre may not seem the perfect day or time for an intense tech rehearsal however we all came armed, prepared and still slightly tired. To begin the tech run we familiarised ourselves with the stage itself and backstage as there were many hazards such as beams, steps and loose wires to trip over, most of which I managed to bump into at some point during the day... The sculpture was placed at the back of the stage and she is beautiful to say the least. We ran the major physical sequences such as the opening, the miner's strike and our foxtrotting scene (we are now all experts). Then it was time for our final tech rehearsal. I think we've set the new record for the fastest quick change, an impressive 10-20seconds to change from our orange boiler suits to blouses (which we already had on under our boiler suits), long 1800's skirts and shawls in order to make it back on stage in time to finish the opening. The rest of the run ran rather well, a few mistakes that you would expect to occur with a tech rehearsal as you cope with the different space, lighting and sound changes and getting your head around the performance on top of everything you would normally have to deal with, therefore we could just iron out the mistakes so that we nailed the actual performance. After a great tech rehearsal, we had a couple of hours to relax and have lunch so we all decided to go find somewhere to sit a little walk from the theatre, alongside a lot of Pokemon hunting. Then it came to the show. Everyone was anxious as we started because we knew how much this performance meant to people in the audience and the cause to remember the miner's killed. My first speech was all about how it felt bringing a child up without her father there too and how fitting back in to society was difficult with finding a new partner. Also my 'daughter's' feelings on the whole situation (massive well done to Violet, Lyla, Kirsty and Eliana). My second speech was based on a young girl about to leave her family and best friend behind to move on to the next chapter of her life at a university in Manchester and how she comes to realise how she has connections with the family of the miners who died all them years ago. This character was particularly hard as we found that my final speech became rehearsed and lost the fresh meaning behind it that we needed for the scene to feel real so I kept having to find new ways to say it. All in all Remember the Oaks was a massive success and we all felt so proud and privileged to be apart of something so special.
