Top tips for directors!

·      Get the culture right
·      Build an atmosphere of trust
·      Yes and all the way with the bravery to discard what isn’t useful;
·      Story and character is everything
·      Give them the vocal skills and physicality to become the character and tell the story
·      Make sure your actors know what your characters want at all times
·      Make sure they know who they are addressing each line to
·      Empower your actors to be the best they can be within the ensemble of the company
·      Focus on the distance travelled as well as the destination
·      Play to encourage discovery, flexibility and openness
·      Don’t be afraid to say I don’t know or to change things

·      Know when it’s time to hand the play over

Connections 2025 marked a turning point for me—it made me realise that Yew Tree Youth Theatre is exactly what I’ve been missing my whole life.  I only joined a year ago, and this was both my first and last time taking part in Connections. I wish I had more time to perform with these people, because I’ve never met a cast so full of love, kindness, and  talent. Yew Tree Youth Theatre. 2024 - Fred

What a year (That's a good thing, by the way). My favourite shows, my favourite rehearsals, my favourite year; so you can hopefully gather that I've enjoyed it all.  But in all reality, my blog should start in 2023, as National Theatre Connections began then.  I had been cast, along with Izzy, in the role of Noush, which quickly I became attached to. As the rehearsal process continued into the year of 2024, I only grew to like the role even more. Kiss/Marry/PushOffCliff - as the play was called - soon shaped up to be a fantastic show. The year before (I know, this is meant to be 2024, but everything, after all, is interconnected) I'd shown interest in NT Connections but had shied away, thinking I was not capable enough for such a task.   Hi, it’s Amani.   I joined Yew Tree Youth Theatre when I auditioned for Aladdin the Musical all the way back in 2016. On March 2nd that year, I found out I’d been cast as Wish #4. 6-year-old me probably thought it was going to be yet another one-time show with one of many youth theatres I had briefly attended back then; and yet here I am almost a decade later.   Participating in NT Connections was something I had wanted to do for a long time. Unfortunately I wasn’t old enough at first, and then last year I was unable to participate due to not being available during February half term for rehearsals. However I was extremely excited to audition this year and finally take part in the Connections process.   Auditions were a little different for me, as I wasn’t aware that I was able to partake in Connections this year until the day beforehand and, as such, didn’t have any time to prepare a passage from the script.
